BOARD COMPOSITION AND RECRUITMENT

“We need new board members”

“We don’t really have a board orientation”

I’ve heard these comments from many nonprofit leaders over the years.

When preparing to recruit new trustees it is important to review and clarify the responsibilities of the board as well as the expectations of individual trustees. A candid evaluation of the current board size and composition will form the foundation of your recruitment campaign.

I will help your board create a profile of the preferred candidates, identify prospects, plan how you will approach people about serving on your board and successfully bring on new members. All new trustees should be people the board would consider as future officers or committee chairpersons.

Another component of the recruitment effort will be to establish both formal and informal ways to orient new trustees to your agency as well as to the board.

“Your ability to recognize and respect sensitive cultural issues was a key factor in supporting this organization’s rapid change... For the first time in years, we have functional bylaws and board members are elected through a nominating process.”
